Stuck at 1200? The free wins just dried up
Below 1200 you win when the opponent self-destructs. At 1200 they mostly stop. Now you need to create advantages on purpose — which means calculating in order instead of by intuition, knowing what to do when there's no tactic, and converting endgames you're already winning.

What actually keeps players at 1200
1.You calculate by hope, not by order
1200s see the right first move, then stop. Force the discipline: candidate moves first, then the opponent's best reply — not their worst. Three candidate moves, one reply each, beats staring at one line for two minutes.
2.No plan when nothing is hanging
Quiet positions are where 1200s drift. Learn the questions that generate plans: worst-placed piece? pawn breaks? which side of the board is yours? A mediocre plan beats no plan every time.
3.Won endgames slip away
You're up a piece and it still ends in a draw — or worse. King activity, opposition, and the outside passed pawn are 90% of endgames at this level, and they're a weekend of study.
Common questions
Is 1200 a good chess rating?
1200 puts you in roughly the top third of active online players. It's the level where chess stops being about avoiding mistakes and starts being about ideas.
Should I study openings at 1200?
Lightly. One solid choice against e4, one against d4, one system as White — learned as plans, not move lists. Deep theory pays off after 1600.
What's the fastest gain at 1200?
Usually endgames — most 1200s have never studied them, so a weekend on king-and-pawn basics converts several draws and losses a month into wins.
