Lots of players plateau around 1000–1100. Reddit and the chess.com forums are full of the same post: 'I play daily, I do puzzles, I review — nothing moves.' The wall is real, but it's rarely made of what people study. It's made of impulse moves, clock mismanagement, and revenge queuing.

What actually keeps players at 1000
1.Impulse moves in sharp positions
Your games are decided by 2–3 critical moments, and you're spending 4 seconds on them. Before any capture, check, or recapture, run one scan: checks, captures, threats — theirs, then yours. Ten deliberate moves per game removes most 1000-level blunders.
2.The clock is a weapon you're not using
Many 1000s either burn their clock by move 15 and blitz the rest, or bank 5 minutes and lose anyway. Budget it: 10 fast opening moves on pattern, then spend your time exactly where the position turns sharp.
3.Tilt erases your progress
The rating you gain in your first three games often disappears in revenge games queued 10 seconds after a loss. A 2-minute review between games — or a hard stop after two straight losses — is one of the cheapest rating gains at this level.

No — 1000 means you've moved past the true-beginner stage. You're an intermediate player with beginner habits left to remove.
How do I go from 1000 to 1500?
In order: kill impulse blunders (checks-captures-threats scan), fix your single worst opening, learn the top 5 endgames, and control tilt. Each one can be worth real rating; theory-heavy study can wait.
Why am I getting worse at chess at 1000?
Usually volume without review — playing tired, on tilt, or in bursts of blitz. Rating follows the quality of your worst sessions, not the brilliance of your best games.
