How to beat the French Defense: attack the position, not the pawns
The French concedes something concrete on move one: the c8-bishop is born bad, locked behind its own pawn chain. Every plan against the French flows from that fact. At club level the Advance Variation (3.e5) is the practical weapon — you get space, a clear plan, and French players get the cramped game they hate defending against imprecise attackers... except you won't be imprecise.

The plan
1.Advance, then defend d4 like it's your job
After 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5, everything Black does targets d4 (...c5, ...Nc6, ...Qb6). Your setup: c3, Nf3, Be2 or Bd3, and only then ambitions. Club players lose Advance Frenches by attacking before d4 is stable — secure it first, and Black's whole counterplay is spent.
2.Trade off their good bishop, never their bad one
Black's f8-bishop is their good piece; the c8-bishop is a tall pawn. If they offer trades, take the good one, avoid releasing the bad one. Endgames a piece-for-piece 'equal' are winning when their remaining bishop stares at its own pawns.
3.The kingside is yours by default
With e5 fixed, you own more space where their king lives. The standard winning plan below 1800: secure the center, then f4-f5 or a piece attack with Bd3, Qe2/Qg4, and h4. The French player's defensive task is real — most club players fail it under sustained pressure.

What's the easiest line against the French Defense?
The Advance (3.e5) for plans, or the Exchange (3.exd5) for simplicity. The Exchange is drawish by reputation but at club level it simply gives an equal, open position where the better player wins — which can absolutely be your choice.
Why is the French annoying to play against?
Because it's a counterpuncher: careless space-grabbing gets undermined by ...c5 and ...f6. The cure is patience — stabilize d4 and e5 before attacking, and their counterplay never arrives.
How do I find out my actual score against the French?
Your fingerprint lists it — every opening you face, with your score as each color. If the French is a leak, one evening on the Advance plan plus the matching video is typically worth a quick 50 elo against 1.e4 e6 players.
